AVP tourney a good tune up before Rio Games

The U.S. Olympic men’s beach volleyball team of Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb, won the title Sunday of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Manhattan Beach Open. The tournament celebrated its 57th year.

It was the final tournament for the pair, who are one of two teams to represent the U.S. in men’s beach volleyball at the Rio Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Patterson and Gibb, residents of Huntington Beach and the top-seed in the tournament, rallied to defeated No. 3 Tri Bourne/John Hyden in a close finals match, 17-21, 21-18, 16-14, to win the $20,000 top prize. It was their 13th overall AVP title as a team, third for Gibb and first for Patterson at Manhattan Beach.

The other U.S. team of Phil Dalhauser (Manhattan Beach) and Nick Lucena (Tallahassee, Fla.), were the No. 2-seed in the tournament and lost in the semifinals to Patterson and Gibb (10-10, retired), and finished equal-third with the fourth-seeded team of Taylor and Trevor Crabb.

On the women’s side, the No. 6-seeded team of Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar toppled top-seeded Lane Carico/Summer Ross in the final Saturday, 21-16, 19-21, 19-17, to win their first final together and also earned $20,000.

Whitney Pavlik of Laguna Beach, and partner Amanda Dowdy (Redondo Beach), the No. 7-seed in the tournament, finished equal-seventh with No. 4-seeded Jennifer Fopma/Jennifer Kessy. Pavlik and Dowdy were eliminated by Day/Hochevar in Round 5 of the Contender’s Bracket.

Pavlik had teamed with Kerri Walsh Jennings to win the women’s title at the Manhattan Beach Open in 2013.

Lauren Fendrick (Hermosa Beach) and Brooke Sweat (Hermosa Beach), one of two women’s teams to represent the U.S. at the upcoming Rio Games, were seeded third in the tournament and finished equal-third with No. 2-seed Kim DiCello/Kendra VanZwieten.

As is tradition with the tournament, the winning teams had their names etched into the Manhattan Beach Pier.

The top-seeded U.S. Olympic team of April Ross (Costa Mesa) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach) didn’t compete at Manhattan Beach.
