Kanoa Igarashi and Brett Simpson represented Huntington Beach on Friday at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Neither of them was able to come up with a heat win in Round 4 of the men’s competition, but one of them is moving on to the Final 16.

Surfing in the sixth of eight three-man Round 4 heats, Igarashi posted a best two-wave score of 12.50 and took second place, just 1.17 points behind heat winner Torrey Meister of Australia, who posted a 13.67 score.

Igarashi, who came into Friday’s heat having won his first two heats of the Open earlier in the week, still was able to secure a spot in Saturday’s Round 5. He will take on Conner Coffin of Santa Barbara in the fifth of eight two-man heats Saturday.

Meister, who placed second in his Round 1 heat but has won his last three heats, will face Bino Lopes of Brazil in Heat 6. Lopes was shaded by Coffin (10.13-10.04) in Heat 5 on Friday but still advanced.

Simpson wasn’t as fortunate Friday. The two-time Open men’s winner, who had won a Round 2 heat and finished second in a Round 3 heat Thursday, finished third in the final heat of the day Friday. He was third (8.70) behind winner Carlos Munoz of Cosa Rica (13.94) and Maxime Huscenot of France (12.83) and did not advance.

Both Munoz and Huscenot moved on to Round 5.
