Lakers assistant Chuck Person to interview for Warriors job

Lakers assistant coach Chuck Person will interview for the vacant head-coaching job with the Golden State Warriors early this week, according to a person close to the situation not authorized to comment publicly.

Person also is expecting to be contacted by the Indiana Pacers this week regarding their opening, according to the same person.

The Warriors are looking to replace the fired Keith Smart.

The Pacers are interviewing candidates for the job Frank Vogel has held as the interim head coach.

Lakers assistant Brian Shaw also is a candidate for the Warriors job and is expected to interview soon.

Shaw and Person also are candidates to be the Lakers’ head coach.

Stanford win NCAA women’s water polo title

Top-seeded Stanford won the championship match in the NCAA women’s water polo tournament, defeating No. 2-seeded California, 9-5, at Ann Arbor, Mich. Third-seeded UCLA beat fourth-seeded USC, 6-5, in the third-place match. UC Irvine lost to Indiana, 6-5, in the fifth-place match.

The U.S. men’s national water polo team defeated Canada, 8-6, to close out a two-game set in the FINA World League Prelims at Costa Mesa.

Billy Kennedy is taking over the Texas A&M basketball program, leaving Murray State to replace Mark Turgeon with the Aggies.

Turgeon left last week to coach Maryland.

Kennedy, a former assistant at A&M, has twice been honored as the Ohio Valley Conference coach of the year in his five seasons with the Racers.

Finland scored five late goals to beat Sweden, 6-1, at Bratislava, Slovakia, and claim its second ice hockey world championship title.

In the bronze-medal game, Roman Cervenka scored a hat trick to lead the Czech Republic to a 7-4 victory over Russia.

Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru, 24, died when he jumped off the balcony of his home in Kenya late Sunday, police said Monday.

Police said they were trying to ascertain whether Wanjiru — who won gold at Beijing in 2008 — had deliberately killed himself at his home in Nyahururu.

The Italian tennis federation said eight-time Grand Slam event winner Ken Rosewall was admitted to the stroke ward of a Rome hospital after falling ill while attending the Italian Open.

Rosewall’s wife, Wilma, was quoted by Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald saying the 76-year-old had suffered no heart or brain damage but was being kept under observation until he was well enough to return to Australia.
