Minnesota basketball recruit faces charges

Another Minnesota basketball recruit is in trouble: Freshman forward Royce White faces misdemeanor charges of theft and fifth-degree assault for allegedly shoplifting and shoving a security guard at the Mall of America.

Coach Tubby Smith announced indefinite suspensions Tuesday for White and senior guard Devron Bostick for violations of team rules he wouldn’t identify. According to the Bloomington city attorney’s office, White has a Nov. 17 arraignment scheduled stemming from the Oct. 13 incident at the mall.

Police Cmdr. Jim Ryan said Bostick wasn’t involved in the incident with Royce at the mall in which Ryan said Royce tried to shoplift a pair of pants.

Christopher Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a three-point basket with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Division II Le Moyne stunned host Syracuse, 82-79, in an exhibition game. Wes Johnson, who led Syracuse with 34 points, made a three-pointer to put Syracuse ahead 79-78 with 22 seconds left. Christopher Johnson responded with his sixth three-pointer of the game.

UCLA plays its first exhibition game of the season against Concordia at Pauley Pavilion at 7:30 tonight. Concordia was No. 8 in the NAIA preseason poll. The Bruins will go with a roster slimmed by injury, particularly at point guard, where Malcolm Lee and former walk-on Mustafa Abdul-Hamid are expected to share time.

Seahawks release Edgerrin James

The struggling Seattle Seahawks have released running back Edgerrin James.

James signed with Seattle in late August hoping to revitalize a career that fell flat after moving from Indianapolis to Arizona.

In seven games as the backup to Julius Jones, James had just 46 carries for 125 yards and no scores.

Arguing that sports leagues’ drug programs could be “gutted” if not protected from individual states’ laws, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asked Congress to intervene with legislation and found at least one powerful ally.

Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Beverly Hills), who is the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said during a hearing that recent court decisions essentially blocking doping-related suspensions of two Minnesota Vikings players “could render the NFL and Major League Baseball drug testing programs unenforceable, loophole-ridden, and unacceptably weak and ineffective.”

Bowling Green beats Buffalo

Tyler Sheehan threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Freddie Barnes with 39 seconds left to give Bowling Green a 30-29 victory over Buffalo in Amherst, N.Y.

The Falcons (4-5, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) rallied from a 13-point deficit as Sheehan threw two passes for touchdowns in the fourth quarter. He was 22 for 40 for 313 yards and an interception. Jeffvon Gill ran for 172 yards and a touchdown for Buffalo (3-6, 1-4 MAC).

Notre Dame’s high-flying offense got one of its most potent players back with the return of receiver Michael Floyd.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore was second in the nation in receiving yards at 160 yards a game when he broke his left collarbone trying to make a catch against Michigan State on Sept. 19 in the third game of the season.

A day after Syracuse Coach Doug Marrone announced that star wideout Mike Williams had quit the team, the first-year coach said that he suspended tailback Antwon Bailey, defensive end Torrey Ball and offensive guard Andrew Tiller for violating team rules.

Nebraska defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh has been disciplined by the team after being ticketed for negligent driving for ramming three parked cars with his sport utility vehicle over the weekend.

United, Chelsea go to next round

Manchester United and Chelsea scored late goals to reach the next round of the Champions League with Bordeaux and FC Porto.

United trailed 3-1 at home to CSKA Moscow with six minutes left, but Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia scored to make it 3-3 in the Group B game to give last season’s runner-up the point needed to advance.
