Cal Coach Mike Montgomery reprimanded for shoving Allen Crabbe

California basketball Coach Mike Montgomery was reprimanded by the Pac-12 Conference on Monday for shoving one of his players in the chest during a game against USC.

The conference did not announce what punishment Montgomery received for his actions Sunday night, although he will not be suspended.

“While emotions can run high in competitive environments, Pac-12 coaches are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect credit on the institution and the conference,” Commissioner Larry Scott said.

The confrontation happened during a timeout early in the second half of Cal’s 76-68 win Sunday night when Montgomery yelled at star guard Allen Crabbe for nonchalant play and then shoved him in the chest with both hands.

Montgomery downplayed the run-in immediately after the game but later issued an apology through the school.

Former Duke star Phil Henderson has died, the school said.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski said that Henderson’s mother told him that her son died Sunday at his home in the Philippines at age 44. No cause of death was given.

Henderson was a senior captain and the leading scorer on the 1989-90 Duke team that lost to Nevada Las Vegas in the national championship game.

Friday horse racing moves to afternoons

Hollywood Park is ending its Friday night racing cards for the spring-summer meeting, track President Jack Liebau said.

Hollywood Park had been trying to attract younger racing fans with night racing on Fridays, along with concerts after the races.

But Liebau said, “We weren’t successful in converting people who came on Friday night to come to races on other days.” Hollywood Park will move its Friday racing to afternoons.

Hollywood Park is scheduled to hold its meeting from April 24 to July 14, racing primarily Thursday through Sunday. Liebau said horsemen prefer racing in the afternoon, which could help increase field sizes.

According to the Daily Racing Form, Hollywood Park has run Friday evenings since 1991.

Mizdirection led all the way in winning the $150,000 Buena Vista Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Hall of Fame member Mike Smith, Mizdirection ran one mile on the turf in 1:33.50 and paid $3.20, $2.60 and $2.10 as the 3-5 favorite in the field of eight. She hadn’t run the distance since winning at Del Mar on Aug. 19, 2011.

Roger Clemens said little publicly immediately after the baseball Hall of Fame vote.

More than a month later, he’s willing to share his thoughts — but the 354-game winner is not about to start a lobbying campaign.
