Jarrett and Medlock earn honors

UCLA kicker Justin Medlock, USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett and former Long Beach Poly High standout DeSean Jackson each doubled up on All-America teams announced Tuesday.

Medlock, a senior who made 26 of 30 field goals and all 26 point-after kicks, was a first-team selection by the Associated Press and the Sporting News. Jarrett, a junior who made 59 catches for 810 yards and 10 touchdowns, made the AP’s top squad for the second consecutive season.

Jackson, a sophomore at California, made the AP first team as an all-purpose player and the Sporting News’ first team as a punt returner.

USC offensive tackle Sam Baker and UCLA defensive end Justin Hickman were first team Sporting News selections and second team by the AP.

Trojans center Ryan Kalil was a second-team pick on both squads. USC freshman Taylor Mays was on the Sporting News’ second team as a safety.

Boise State running back Ian Johnson, a La Verne Damien High graduate, was third team by the AP and second team by the Sporting News. Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan, out of Mater Dei High and Saddleback College, was a third-team AP choice.

Hall of Fame receiver James Lofton and Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti are among the candidates to have interviewed with Stanford about replacing the fired Walt Harris as coach.

The New York Times reported that former Stanford assistant and New York Giants coach Jim Fassel was interviewed this week in Chicago.

Montana State cornerback Andre Fuller was charged with selling cocaine and has been suspended from the team, school officials said in Bozeman.

Fuller, 22, a junior from Pompano Beach, Fla., was arrested Monday, as were former receiver Edward Sullivan, 23, of Carlsbad and former cornerback Derrick Lamont Davis Jr., 21, of Santa Monica.

All three are accused of selling drugs.

Todd Dodge was hired as coach at North Texas, making the rare jump from high school to Division I-A after a 77-1 record at Texas’ Southlake Carroll.

The NFL made a “free view” offer for the week of Dec. 24-30 that would allow Time Warner Cable and Cablevision subscribers in the New York-New Jersey area to watch the Dec. 24 Texas Bowl between Rutgers and Kansas State on NFL Network, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced.

Cablevision and Time Warner are mired in a dispute with the league-owned network over carriage issues and currently do not offer it.

No live regular-season NFL games will air on the network during the free-view period, which ends before the Giants-Redskins game the night of Dec. 30.

Maureen Huff, a spokeswoman for Time Warner Cable, said the proposal was being reviewed.
