Dodgers fumble away another game in 5-3 loss to Phillies

Best laid plans and all. Tired of shoddy play on the field, and with shortstop Hanley Ramirez out because of a sore left calf, the Dodgers fielded what they thought was their best defensive lineup.

They then allowed three unearned runs on a pair of errors in their 5-3 loss to the Phillies on Saturday in Philadelphia.

Unable to do much against right-hander David Buchanan, who was making his major league debut, the Dodgers started fumbling this one away early.

Dan Haren was shaky early but managed to hang around for six innings. In the first inning, he gave up a leadoff double to Ben Revere. One out later, catcher A.J. Ellis dropped a little Chase Utley pop-up near the Phillies’ on-deck circle for an error.

Given new life, Utley drilled a two-run homer.

In the second inning, Haren issued a pair of leadoff walks and singles by Revere and Jimmy Rollins scored two more.

Haren settled down after that, and the Dodgers started chipping away with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

The Phillies had added a fifth run in the fifth inning, aided by another error. Revere hit a tapper up the first base line that Haren threw away for an error. The Dodgers argued Revere ran out of the baseline to no avail. Revere scored on a groundout.

Haren (5-3) gave up six hits and walked two. He struck out seven. Buchanan went five innings without walking a batter. He was charged with two runs on six hits, striking out two.

The Dodgers got the tying runs on with two outs in the ninth inning, but closer Jonathan Papelbon struck out Scott Van Slyke to earn his 13th save.
