Dodgers finalizing deal to acquire Jimmy Rollins, Phillies shortstop

The Dodgers appeared close to securing a shortstop on Wednesday, moving toward acquiring three-time All-Star Jimmy Rollins from the rebuilding Philadelphia Phillies.

The deal was not complete as of midafternoon Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the matter but not authorized to discuss it. It was not immediately clear what the Dodgers might give up in the trade, but the Phillies are expected to receive two prospects as part of a potential deal.

Rollins would nicely fit the Dodgers’ need for a short-term solution at shortstop. The Dodgers want to keep the position open for their top prospect, Corey Seager, who could make the major leagues as soon as later this year.

Rollins, 36, is signed for $11 million next season. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has played his entire 15-year career with the Phillies and has the right to veto any trade.

He batted .243 with 17 home runs and 28 stolen bases last season and is still rated highly on defense. His acquisition would enable the Dodgers to get some offense from shortstop rather than play glove men Miguel Rojas or Erisbel Arruebarrena there.

Rollins won the 2007 National League most valuable player award and helped lead the Phillies to the 2008 World Series championship.
