Redskins apparently don’t consider Robert Griffin III part of nucleus

The Washington Redskins recently sent a letter to premium club members that states the team is “poised to rebound next season!”

While that may be a bit optimistic for a squad that has mustered a mere seven wins in the past two seasons, the real surprising part comes in how the letter explains the Redskins are going to turn things around.

Leading the charge, the letter states, are Coach Jay Gruden, General Manager Scot McCloughan, and defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Makes sense.

Plus, there’s a “nucleus” of players key to those plans as well.

It includes offensive tackle Trent Williams, running back Alfred Morris, wide receiver DeSean Jackson, linebacker Ryan Kerrigan and ...

That’s it.

As you may have noticed, there’s no mention of quarterback Robert Griffin III, the guy the Redskins moved up to draft in 2012 and led them to a surprise playoff berth that season but has come tumbling down to Earth since then.

RG3 hasn’t been the same since having knee surgery after the 2012 season and has been benched twice since then. Still, he has one more year left on his rookie contract and will count $6.7 million against Washington’s salary cap next year whether or not he’s on the roster.

So chances are he will be with the Redskins next season -- he apparently just isn’t part of the nucleus of the team.
