Poly Falls to Dons in Overtime

Hilton Dawson’s two-point conversion run after Brandon Johnson’s two-yard touchdown run in overtime gave unranked Compton Dominguez a 39-37 upset of Long Beach Poly, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, Friday at Long Beach Veterans Stadium.

Terrence Austin caught a 40-yard pass from Gabriel Thomas for Poly’s overtime score after the Jackrabbits (2-2) had been penalized 15 yards for holding. Trying for two points to tie, running back Ellis Anderson stumbled and fell behind the line of scrimmage.

Coach Willie Donerson said the victory was second only to the Dons’ Southern Section Division II championship win over Chino Hills Ayala in 1996.

“We had to go for it,” he said. “This isn’t close to the CIF ring, but it’s a nice win.”

Anderson carried the ball in from five yards with 1:42 left in regulation to pull Poly even and into overtime. His touchdown was set up by a 34-yard pass play from Thomas to Austin.

Dominguez (3-1) led for most of the game thanks to two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Marvin Johnson.

Poly played without running back Troy Guthrie and cornerback Vincent Joseph, both starters, who were out because of injuries.

Los Angeles Dorsey 31, Oakland McClymonds 0 -- For the first time this season, All-City tailback Stafon Johnson played defense, and McClymonds, ranked No. 15 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, couldn’t handle Johnson on either side of the ball.

Johnson returned a fumble 64 yards for a touchdown, ran 51 and 10 yards for touchdowns and finished with 168 yards rushing in 14 carries as Dorsey (3-1), ranked No. 18 in the state, overwhelmed McClymonds (3-1) at Rancho Cienega Park.

Dorsey’s defense was in control throughout. Besides Johnson’s terrific tackling at the rover position, Preston Brooks was dominant at defensive tackle. Theo O’Neil returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown, and sophomore free safety Rahim Moore also had an interception.

Ventura St. Bonaventure 49, Encino Crespi 24 -- Matt Evans completed 16 of 24 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns and the Seraphs jumped to a 21-10 halftime lead in a nonleague game at Crespi.

St. Bonaventure (5-0), ranked No. 6, forced three turnovers and extended its winning streak to 15 games.

Matt Wabby of Crespi (2-2) completed only eight of 23 passes for 75 yards and was harassed by the St. Bonaventure defense all night.

Josh Morgan ran 18 times for 120 yards to lead the Seraphs.

Ricky Garcia caught seven passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns and Kyle Maddux returned a blocked punt 33 yards for a score to give St. Bonaventure its biggest lead, 49-10, with 9:29 left.

La Puente Bishop Amat 31, La Verne Damien 3 -- The Lancers limited the Spartans (3-1) to 156 total yards and nine first downs, forced four turnovers and recorded seven sacks in the nonleague game at Damien.

Bishop Amat (4-1), ranked No. 19, turned those turnovers into 13 points and scored another two when George Fletcher sacked Damien’s Mark Mendrun in the end zone for a safety and a 12-0 lead. Fletcher later returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to make it 19-0.

Quarterback Daniel Robles completed 10 of 18 passes for 199 yards and Dominique Gaisie rushed 18 times for 147 yards as the Lancers amassed 376 yards in offense.

Kicker Jeremy Gener had field goals of 41 and 26 yards in the first half and a 40-yarder in the third quarter.
