Baseball: Trevor Franklin throws no-hitter to lift Mira Costa, 1-0

Trevor Franklin, a Pepperdine-bound pitcher for Mira Costa, knew he needed to be at his best on Friday going against Culver City’s Nolan Martinez, a promising pro prospect.

Franklin delivered, throwing a no-hitter to help Mira Costa defeat Culver City, 1-0. The only run came across on a squeeze bunt in the seventh by Ty Conrad. Franklin walked one and struck out two. Martinez gave up three hits with five strikeouts in six innings. Mira Costa is 7-1.

Marina 4, Huntington Beach 0: It was not a good day for defending Division 1 champion Huntington Beach. Riley Ohl threw a two-hitter and struck out nine for Marina. Also, the Oilers have lost standout two-way player Logan Pouelsen for the season after he underwent Tommy John surgery. He was injured in a game against Orange Lutheran earlier this season.

Los Alamitos 3, Edison 1: The Griffins won their Sunset League opener.

Fountain Valley 4, Newport Harbor 1: The Barons got a win in their Sunset League opener. Travis Burleson threw a three-hitter to improve to 3-0. Trent Sievers had two hits.

Chaminade 7, Harvard-Westlake 5: Nick Kahle hit a two-run walk-off home run, giving Chaminade two wins in three games to start Mission League play against the Wolverines. Kahle finished with four RBIs. John Thomas went three for three for Harvard-Westlake.

Loyola 4, Alemany 1: Junior Blake Beers threw four shutout innings of relief and struck out five to help Loyola get a three-game sweep of the Warriors to start Mission League play.

St. Francis 10, Crespi 9: The Golden Knights won their first Mission League game.

Bonita 13, Glendora 2: Bonita stayed unbeaten in winning its Palomares League opener. AJ Woodall struck out eight in six innings. Kenji Henderson had three hits and four RBIs. Jake Bryant homered for Glendora.

South Hills 5, Diamond Bar 0: Hayden Petrovick allowed one hit in five innings. Karlos Morales finished with three hits.

Aliso Niguel 3, El Toro 2: In a South Coast League opener, Zak Nocon threw 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

Esperanza 7, El Dorado 4: Ryan Rafferty contributed three hit to lead Esperanza.

Agoura 3, Thousand Oaks 2: Garreth Lautz struck out six in six innings and Jonny DeLuca had two RBIs for Agoura.

Oaks Christian 3, Calabasas 2: The Lions rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh to win in eight innings. Rylan Thomas tied the game with two outs on a single. Noah Prewett scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Dane Morrow threw seven innings for Oaks Christian.

Westlake 4, Newbury Park 1: Eddie Kutt threw a three-hitter for 6 2/3 innings and Mason Harvey had two RBIs for Westlake. Bo Jelinek got the save and had two hits.

Simi Valley 5, Moorpark 4: The Pioneers won in nine innings. Cal Hodgins had three hits. Owen Sharts struck out two in the ninth to escape a jam.

Bishop Amat 6, Cathedral 2: Dante Castillo had two hits and two RBIs for the Lancers.

North Hollywood 1, Monroe 0: Victor Meza threw a three-hit shutout in the East Valley League game.

Sun Valley Poly 13, Grant 0: Tony Ramirez threw a one-hitter for the Parrots.

Beckman 5, University 0: Jack Wiese threw six shutout innings, striking out four. Tyler Geurts had three RBIs and Matt McLain had two hits.

Corona Santiago 3, Corona 2: Brice Turang went four for four to lead Santiago.

Orange Lutheran 11-6, Puyallup 2-2: Nathan Flores had two hits and three RBIs for the Lancers in the first game of a doubleheader. Three pitchers combined for a four-hitter in the second game.

Hart 8, West Ranch 4: Robert Reeves had three hits and Matt Elser contributed three RBIs in a Foothill League game.

Canyon 13, Golden Valley 6: The Cowboys won the Foothill League game.

Valencia 4, Saugus 3: Ben Fariss hit a two-run walk-off home run for the Vikings.

Sierra Canyon 3, Paraclete 1: Billy Edwards threw six innings, striking out four with zero walks. Jake Patterson, Seth Stone and Noah Levin had two hits each.

St. Bonaventure 7, Santa Clara 0: Brent Dickey threw a no-hitter.

Dos Pueblos 6, Santa Barbara 2: Dos Pueblos inflicted a rare defeat on pitcher Kevin Gowdy, scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Colter Nisbet had a two-run single. Darby Naughten improved to 3-0.

Mater Dei 6, Cypress 2: The Monarchs got the nonleague victory. Jonathan Schiffer had a home run and four RBIs.

Vista Murrieta 4, Great Oak 2: Jake Moberg had two hits and three RBIs.

Foothill 5, Villa Park 0: Dillon Brown struck out eight and threw a three-hitter. He also had an RBI double.

Quartz Hill 5, Highland 3: Jonathan Cornish scored three runs in the Golden League game.
