Football: Campolindo comeback stuns El Capitan, 35-28

Adam Remotto returned a fumble 85 yards for the winning touchdown with 52 seconds left to complete a remarkable comeback by Moraga Campolindo, which scored the last 28 points in a 35-28 victory over Lakeside El Capitan in the CIF state championship Division III bowl game at StubHub Center in Carson.

El Capitan, the San Diego Section champion, took a 28-7 lead on Isaiah Capoocia’s 13-yard run with 2:32 left in the third quarter.

Remotto got Campolindo’s comeback started with a 38-yard touchdown catch from Jack Stephens with 46 seconds left in the third quarter and added a 13-yard scoring reception from Stephens to pull the Cougars (16-0) to within 28-21 early in the fourth quarter. Remotto finished with five catches for 121 yards.

Max Flower scored the tying touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Stephens with 4:30 left. Stephens threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns, USC-bound receiver Tyler Petite caught seven passes for 102 yards and Flower added five catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns for Campolindo, the North Coast Section champion.

Brad Cagle threw for 89 yards and two touchdowns and Dennis Smith gained 80 yards in 17 carries for El Capitan (14-1), which took a 21-7 late in the third quarter when Sam Melero returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown.

Northern California teams have won the first three bowl games this weekend, with the Division II and Open Division games to follow.
