“I want to scream right now.”

So said Kayla Washington of Cajon, the standout senior bound for Washington State who led her team to the state Division II final on Saturday morning with a 51-30 victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Washington scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Cajon dominated from the start, opening a 20-5 lead in the first quarter and 28-11 advantage at halftime.

“We wanted to keep her off the boards, but that’s a hard thing to do,” Mater Dei Coach Kevin Kiernan said of Washington. “She’s relentless.”

Tyla Turner, headed to Long Beach State, added 12 points for Cajon, which will play in the 2 p.m. final next Saturday at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

“No other teams I’ve had has executed better than they did,” Cajon Coach Mark Lehman said. “Our plan was not to let them get the ball inside. I’m super pleased.”

Mater Dei was four of 22 from three-point range.
