What we learned from the Kings’ 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Sunday:

Their defense isn’t their problem

Since their sloppy performance in a 6-3 loss at Buffalo to open this seven-game trip, the Kings have lived up to their vow to focus on defense. They’ve allowed only two goals in their last three games, but won only two of those, a 4-1 decision at Detroit and a 1-0 victory at Pittsburgh. Their 1-0 loss at Boston on Sunday was the fourth time they’ve been shut out this season and first time since Nov. 1, the finale in a streak of being shut out three straight times.

They’re 2-2 on this trip, with three games left before Christmas. Not bad, but not as good a record as it might be. Left wing Dwight King knows what’s missing. “Maybe just more production,” he said. “Our defense has been all right. It’s just capitalizing. Moving around a little more in the offensive zone, getting a little more creative, I think will go a long way.”

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas …

And that will mean a break for the Kings, but they’ll have to pack their bags again to play the last two road games of a stretch in which they’ll play nine in a row away from home. Their Christmas wish list might include wins at Columbus, Nashville and Dallas before the holiday, but defenseman Matt Greene said the team has a big-picture outlook.

“We’ve just got to get better,” he said when asked to assess the team’s performance on the trip so far.

“We have three big games that we have left here and we’re looking at one at a time, but looking to win them all. We want points. It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, we want ’em, so every focus now shifts to Columbus and getting better and getting two points there.”

The injury that kept Dustin Brown out isn’t major

Coach Darryl Sutter said he knew after Friday’s game at Pittsburgh that an upper-body injury would leave Brown unavailable for Sunday’s 1 p.m. EST start. However, Sutter indicated that Brown won’t be out long-term.

“When you play in 36 hours after a game, the player doesn’t get healed up enough. If it’s a night game maybe he plays [Sunday],” Sutter said. “If we played [Sunday night], he’d have been closer to playing.”

Brown had played 207 consecutive games. With that streak over, the Kings’ longest active consecutive-games-played streak belongs to Drew Doughty, at 195 in a row since Oct. 8, 2014.

Break time

The Kings are scheduled for a day off on Monday in Columbus. Players usually take it easy, going out for dinner or to a movie or seeing friends. Right wing Tyler Toffoli has simple plans.

“Hanging out and getting some fluids and relaxing,” he said.

And forgetting hockey for a day? “Trying to, yeah,” he said.
