Angels defeat Brewers, 9-6, in spring game

Angels 9, Brewers 6

AT THE PLATE: Mike Trout hit a towering two-run homer to left-center field and singled to raise his spring average to .426 (20 for 47) with five homers and 16 runs batted in. Josh Hamilton, sidelined by a left hamstring strain for three weeks, singled and hit a solo homer. J.B. Shuck hit his fifth triple of the spring, and utility infield candidate Chad Tracy hit a three-run homer in the seventh.

ON THE MOUND: Closer Ernesto Frieri, pitching on back-to-back days for the first time this spring, struck out two in a scoreless sixth against the Brewers and has given up no runs and two hits in seven innings. Fernando Salas gave up one run in the seventh. In a triple-A exhibition, Hector Santiago got roughed up by Arizona’s team, giving up six runs in five-plus innings but throwing 95 pitches.

EXTRA BASES: Left-hander Brian Moran, out for a week because of a sore elbow, began playing catch Saturday, but the Rule 5 pick will start the year on the disabled list. … Former St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa and former Indiana University basketball coach Bob Knight were in camp Saturday to encourage the Angels to support a program they are developing to aid military veterans.
