A hamstring strain lands Giants starter Matt Cain on 15-day DL for the second time this season

San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained right hamstring. The trip to the DL, Cain's second this year, was retroactive to May 22.

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy says Yusmeiro Petit will start in Cain's place for the second straight time Saturday. Bochy anticipates Cain will make his next start at home June 6 against the New York Mets.

Bochy says Cain was willing to pitch but admitted he was still feeling something in the hamstring. Bochy says if it was mid-September and the Giants were in a tight race, Cain would have pitched.

Cain is 1-3 with a 3.66 earned-run average in eight starts. Petit is 3-2 with a 5.08 ERA in 14 games, four of them starts.
