Jacob deGrom won’t start for the New York Mets against Atlanta on Tuesday because the team thinks the 2014 NL rookie of the year needs some rest.

Manager Terry Collins said he wasn’t sure whether the 27-year-old deGrom’s start would be pushed back or skipped. The right-hander is 13-8 with a 2.64 earned-run average in 28 starts this year, his first full big league season, but is 1-2 with a 6.41 ERA in his last five outings. He has pitched 181 innings.

Toronto shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said he’s “making strides” in his recovery from a broken bone in his left shoulder but is no closer to knowing when he might be able to return. He hasn’t played since Sept. 12. . . . Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez won’t play first base for the rest of this season, even when the team needs his bat in National League ballparks. Rodriguez, who leads New York with 32 home runs, took grounders at first ahead of a late-season series at Atlanta, but Manager Joe Girardi said, “It just didn’t look right, so we decided not to do it.”
