Oceanside wins Division I state bowl game

Oceanside took command in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points on its way to a 24-19 victory over San Jose Bellarmine Prep in the Division I state bowl championship game Friday night at the Home Depot Center.

Mike McGovern’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Olugbode pulled the Bells (11-2-1) to within 24-19 with 2 minutes 31 seconds left, but McGovern’s pass on a two-point conversion attempt was intercepted at the goal line. Noah Tarrant then recovered the ensuing onside kick for Oceanside.

The Pirates (14-0) controlled the ball for more than 7 1/2 minutes on a 99-yard, 17-play drive, taking a 17-13 lead early in the fourth quarter when Quentis Clark rolled out and found Jerry Whittaker in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown. On the next series, Rene Siluano turned a short pass from Clark into a 55-yard touchdown and a 24-13 lead with 7:25 left.

Oceanside joined Ventura St. Bonaventure as the only schools to win two state bowl championships. The Pirates beat Novato, 28-14, in the Division II game in 2007. St. Bonaventure won the Division III game in 2007 and 2008.

Oceanside has won 17 games in a row and improved to 38-0-1 since losing its 2007 season opener to Helix.

Modesto Christian edges San Diego Parker

Modesto Christian defensive back Dustin Hayes tackled wide receiver Dalante Dunklin for a loss on fourth-and-goal from the two-yard line with 1:43 left and the Crusaders hung on to defeat San Diego Parker, 44-40, to win the Small Schools Division state championship bowl game at Home Depot Center.

In a showcase of dual-threat senior quarterbacks, Parker’s Deon Randall rushed 36 times for 276 yards and three touchdowns, including a one-yard sneak that gave the Lancers a 40-36 lead with 8:49 remaining. Randall also completed eight of 16 passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns and set a state bowl record with 386 total yards.

Isaiah Burse of Modesto Christian (15-0) rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries and completed seven of nine passes for 89 yards and three touchdowns, including strikes of 11 and 29 yards to Kevin Roya, who had 151 yards in 13 carries and three catches for 47 yards.

The lead changed hands five times, the last time on Keaton Engel’s two-yard run for the go-ahead touchdown for Modesto Christian with 5:38 left.
