No. 19 Louisville ends No. 2 North Carolina’s 12-game win streak with 71-65 victory

Damion Lee scored 24 points, including two free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining, to help No. 19 Louisville upset No. 2 North Carolina, 71-65, on Monday night in Louisville, ending the Tar Heels’ 12-game winning streak.

After scoring just six points in Saturday’s loss to then-No. 11 Virginia, Lee lifted the Cardinals to a hard-fought victory over the first-place Tar Heels by making eight of 12 shots, including consecutive three-pointers that helped provide a 55-50 lead with 9:35 remaining.

Chinanu Onuaku added a three-point play, Ray Spalding scored and Trey Lewis followed with a big layup and then two free throws with 26 seconds left for a four-point lead.

Lee sealed the win by making two more at the free-throw line as Louisville (18-4, 7-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) handed the Tar Heels (19-3, 8-1) their first conference loss.

Onuaku had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Donovan Mitchell added 10 points for the Cardinals.

Justin Jackson’s 16 points led North Carolina.

at Houston 71, No. 12 Southern Methodist 68: Devonta Pollard scored 23 points and Damyean Dotson added 13 as the Cougars rallied for a victory over Southern Methodist, just the second loss of the season for the Mustangs.

Pollard and Dotson keyed a 21-4 run midway through the second half for Houston (16-6, 6-4 American), which defeated a ranked team for the first time since beating No. 25 SMU in February 2014. The win was the first over a team ranked this high or higher since beating No. 3 Memphis in January 1996.

Nic Moore had 16 points for SMU (19-2, 8-2), which has lost two of its last three. Ben Moore scored 12 points and Markus Kennedy had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Texas 67, at No. 15 Baylor 59: Connor Lammert had 15 points, including a clutch three-pointer in the final minute, and the Longhorns won for the sixth time in their last seven games, beating the Bears.

After Rico Gathers, Baylor’s big man, fouled out and Taurean Prince committed a turnover, Lammert’s three-pointer from the right wing with 44 seconds left put the Longhorns (15-7, 6-3 Big 12) ahead, 62-56. It was his third three of the game.

Gathers, who had 20 points, fouled out with 1:27 left, and Kerwin Roach hit the second of two free throws.

Isaiah Taylor had 12 points for Texas.

Prince had 18 points for the Bears (17-5, 6-3), while Lester Medford added 10.

Baylor tied the game three times in the second half but could never get the lead.
