UCLA, USC Women’s Water Polo Teams Win

UCLA and USC, the top two seeded teams in the NCAA women’s water polo tournament, advanced to the semifinals after blowout victories Friday at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Top-seeded UCLA used a 10-goal first quarter and rolled to a 22-2 victory over Wagner.

Brittney Bowlus led the Bruins (31-0) with four goals. Gabrielle Domanic, Kelly Rulon and Thalia Munro each scored three goals for UCLA, which will face Hawaii today.

Hawaii advanced with a 12-8 victory over Loyola Marymount. Stacia Peterson scored four goals for Loyola.

UCLA has defeated Hawaii three times this season, including a 10-5 semifinal victory in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament last month.

Defending national champion USC (24-4), seeded second, got three goals apiece from Brittany Hayes and Miranda Nichols in an 18-2 victory over Redlands.

Kelly Phillips and Meghan Rosenberger scored the goals for Redlands.

The Trojans will next face Stanford, which defeated host Michigan, 7-2, in another quarterfinal game. Hannah Luber led the Cardinal with three goals.

After beating Stanford twice earlier this season, the Trojans lost to the Cardinal, 9-5, in the semifinals of the MPSF tournament.

Dianne Matias and Carine Vermeulen did not lose a game in singles and the USC women’s tennis team rolled to 4-0 victory over visiting Illinois Chicago in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The Trojans today will face Arizona State, which defeated San Diego State, 4-0.

At UCLA, Laura Gordon lost only one game in singles and teammate Daniela Bercek lost only two to lead the Bruins to a 4-0 win over Illinois State.

UCLA today will face Washington, which defeated Long Beach State, 4-0.

With victories today, USC and UCLA would advance to next week’s round of 16 at Athens, Ga.

USC’s Drew Hoskins defeated Southern Methodist’s Gwinyai Chingoka, 6-3, 6-3, to clinch a 5-2 NCAA first-round victory for the Trojan men’s tennis team at Seattle.

USC today will face host Washington, a 4-0 winner over Oral Roberts.

Today, UCLA will play host to Manhattan in a first-round match. In another local first-round match today, Pepperdine will play host to UC Irvine.

Second-round winners will advance to next week’s round of 16 at College Station, Texas.
