Oregon will look good and feel good at Rose Bowl

Oregon and Wisconsin will be sporting variations of their uniforms in the 98th Rose Bowl.

Oregon’s — no surprise — will be more flamboyant.

Oregon unveiled its green Nike-designed ensemble Tuesday, a few hours before the teams visited Disneyland.

Though it is billed as “the most advanced football uniform system ever assembled,” senior offensive lineman Darrion Weems said the Ducks’ always evolving uniform does not necessarily provide the team with an edge.

“It’s look good, feel good, play good,” he said. “Something like that.”

Weems, who played at Woodland Hills Taft High after being displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, grinned when asked how many uniform combinations he has donned during his five seasons at Oregon.

“Too many to keep track of,” he said. “I couldn’t even begin to tell you.”

Oregon Coach Chip Kelly said Oregon players have a hand in the design.

“The big thing for me is the science behind it,” he said. “The uniforms are lighter than uniforms that other people are wearing.”

Wisconsin is expected to unveil its Adidas-designed ensemble this week.

“The things that we are going to do with it are very mild, very small in look,” Wisconsin Coach Bret Bielema said. “But I think it’s going to mean something to our players because of the significance of getting here.”

Coordinated effort

Wisconsin will leave Pasadena with a different coaching staff than the one preparing for Oregon.

Offensive coordinator Paul Chryst was hired last week as head coach at Pittsburgh, but will remain with the Badgers through Jan. 2.

Bielema also confirmed Tuesday that offensive line coach Bob Bostad would be joining Chryst at Pitt.

“I know we can handle this professionally and it was great to get on the practice field [Tuesday],” Bielema said.

The arrangement worked in at least one recent Rose Bowl.

After the 2008 regular season, USC offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian was hired as Washington’s head coach.

Sarkisian remained with the Trojans through the 2009 Rose Bowl while assembling his Washington staff and recruiting for the Huskies.

It didn’t seem to hurt USC: The Trojans defeated Penn State, 38-24.

Quick hits

Wisconsin defensive lineman Patrick Butrym said the Badgers have a different attitude than when they played in the Rose Bowl last year and lost to Texas Christian. “Last year was our first experience,” he said. “We were a little awestruck — bright eyes and bushy-tailed, whatever you want to say. This time I think it’s a much more businesslike approach.” … Kelly said he was not surprised by USC quarterback Matt Barkley’s decision to forgo the NFL draft and return to the Trojans. “We look forward to playing against him,” Kelly said. “I’ve got all the respect for him in the world. He’s a competitor and I don’t think he’s driven by what most people think. It’s not all about the money with him. He’s got a real love and you can see that when he plays the game.”
