Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will miss Sunday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens after spraining the sternoclavicular joint in his right shoulder against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, according to the team’s website.

It will be only the 12th game Roethlisberger has missed because of injury or suspension in his nine seasons with the Steelers, which include two victories in three Super Bowl appearances.

The team has gone 7-4 in Roethlisbeger’s absence but are 0-3 without him against the Ravens, who have a one-game lead over Pittsburgh atop the AFC North standings. The two teams are scheduled to play each other twice in the next three weeks.

Coach Mike Tomlin announced the injury, which affects Roethlisberger’s shoulder on his throwing arm as well as a rib, on Monday.

Backup Byron Leftwich will make his first start for the Steelers in his two stints with the team (2008, 2010-present) and his first overall start since going 0-3 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010.

Leftwich was drafted seventh overall by Jacksonville in 2003 and spent four years as the Jaguars’ starter. He has a career completion percentage of 58.2 and has thrown 58 passes for touchdowns and 41 passes for interceptions with a passer rating of 79.5.

His most memorable game with the Steelers was in 2008, when he came in for an injured Roethlisberger and completed seven of 10 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown in a 23-6 victory over the Washington Redskins.

A clearly rusty Leftwich, who has been injured most of the last two seasons, went seven for 14 for 73 after Roethlisberger was hurt early in the third quarter Monday night. He did engineer a drive that resulted in a go-ahead field goal during the Steelers’ eventual 16-13 overtime victory.
