ESPN apologizes for Ben Roethlisberger ‘Drink and Drunk’ graphic
Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was the subject of an ESPN segment entitled “Dink and Dunk,” which aired before the Steelers’ game against the Kansas Chiefs on Monday night.
An on-screen graphic promoting the piece, however, added the letter “R” to two of the words and completely changed the meaning of the title.
In what might have been the work of some ESPN prankster that was never supposed to make it on the air, viewers were being promised a segment on the quarterback entitled “Drink and Drunk.”
“Dink and dunk” is how Roethlisberger describes the Steelers’ offense under new coordinator Todd Haley.
“Drink and Drunk” is possibly a reference to a 2010 incident involving alcohol that resulted in Roethlisberger being accused of sexual assault. He ended up not being charged with a crime but was suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league’s conduct policy.
ESPN’s Chris Berman apologized for the graphic later in the pregame show: “”We have to tell you this for sure, earlier in the show we had a graphic error in the rundown. We apologize for the mistake. Not sure how it happened. It won’t happen again.”
