Racing! All in all, a successful first day for Santa Anita

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter with one day of racing at Santa Anita down, seemingly 1,000 to go.

Santa Anita has opening day in the books and it’s some of the books that are the most interesting.

As for the results, my colleague Mike Tierney has the cultured, well-written story on the day’s racing and you can read it here.

But one of the interesting subtexts of the day was the betting pools. Santa Anita has added a late pick five, but unlike the early pick five, which has a takeout of 14%, the late exotic has a 23.68% takeout, which is the standard in California for some multi-horse and multi-race wagers.

The track also added a super hi five, which means picking five horses in order, to every race with a big-enough field.

As for pick five, the early discounted one went gangbusters with almost $200,000 more wagered than last year on the opener. Tuesday’s pool was $974,914 compared to $784,849 a year ago.

Now, it seems the bettors were more discerning when it came to betting the less attractive late pick five, where only $513,701 was wagered. Was it the takeout that made the difference? Or did the early big payoffs drain the pocketbooks of bettors or the always popular combination of both.

The late pick four had $1,623,381 bet last year and $1,435,919 this year. No doubt, the late pick five siphoned off some of that money.

Santa Anita’s other increased frequency wager—the super hi five on every race—started out drawing some pretty deep yawns (or maybe people didn’t know about it) until the first carryover. Here are the sizes of pools for this wager:

Race 1: $3,911.

Race 2: $2,172.

Race 3: Not offered.

Race 4: $3,933.

Race 5: $30,901 (with carryover).

Race 6: $10,968.

Race 7: $10,450.

Race 8: $11,753.

Race 9: $37,764.

That totals $111,852. Last year, the super hi five was only offered in the last race and had a pool of $53,447. We’ll call that a mild success.

Now, the big numbers. Last year, Santa Anita had an on-track attendance of 46,514, while this year it was 40,023. That’s a decrease of about 14%. All in all, not too bad considering last year’s was on a Monday and this year’s a Tuesday. Generally, the best days for a weekday opening are Monday and Friday. So, you can figure out what the bad days are.

Now, if you can draw any conclusions on a one-day sample of betting changes (you can’t) then some of the modifications are working.

The on-track handle increased 7.3% from $3,077,017 to $3,301,104. The total handle went up 3.2% from $16,735,322 to $17,279,161.

Those will be the numbers that will be closely tracked.

OK, that’s too much math for me. Let’s take a brief look at the graded stakes on Tuesday.

San Antonio Stakes review

Giant Expectations, the longest shot in the field, upset Collected to win the $300,000 San Antonio by 3 ¼ lengths. The 1 1/16-mile race had opening fractions of 24.69 and 49.19, which seemed just slow enough to give Giant Expectations plenty at the end.

Accelerate finished second, a head in front of Collected in the five-horse field. Giant Expectations paid $29.00, $8.20 and $3.20. Peter Eurton was the winning trainer with Gary Stevens the jockey.

Mathis Brothers Mile review

Bowie’s Hero, with a strong stretch drive, won the $200,000 turf race for 3 year olds by a half-length over front-running Kloy. It was the colt’s fifth win in 11 starts and first graded stakes win.

Bowie’s Hero paid $8.80, $5.00 and $3.20. Phil D’Amato was the winning trainer and Kent Desormeaux in the saddle.

La Brea Stakes review

In the best match-up of the day, Unique Bella and Paradise Woods took a duel to the top of the stretch and Bella ended up winning by ¾-of-a-length in the $300,000 La Brea Stakes over 7 furlongs for 3-year-old fillies.

Unique Bella, the 6-5 favorite, paid $4.60, $2.80 and $2.60. Jerry Hollendorfer was the winning trainer with Mike Smith aboard.

Malibu Stakes review

City of Light rode the rail for 7 furlongs to win the $300,000 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds. His winning margin was two lengths over Edwards Going Left. Pavel, who ran in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, finished fourth behind shipper Favorable Outcome.

City of Light paid $17.00, $8.80 and $5.60. The winning trainer was Michael McCarthy and Drayden Van Dyke was the jockey.

Final thought

Yes, new racing year, same goals. Looking to jump the circulation of this newsletter. Can’t beat the price. If you like it, tell someone. If you don’t like it, then you’re probably not reading this. We’re off for a day but back on Friday. Until then, the star of the show, Tuesday’s results.
