Racing! Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds heads the weekend

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we get ready for another weekend of Derby preps.

This is the last big weekend of the month on the path to the Kentucky Derby. The big race is Saturday at Fair Grounds in the Risen Star Stakes. The race is worth 50-20-10-5 points, meaning the winner is assured of qualifying for the Derby.

Instilled Regard, who was based in Southern California for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, is the 8-5 favorite. His last race was a 3¾-length win in the Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds.

Local racegoers will remember him from the Los Alamitos Futurity in which Solomini crossed the line first, followed by McKinzie and then Instilled Regard. However, stewards ruled that Solomini interfered with Instilled Regard and was taken down. McKinzie was named the winner and Instilled Regard was second.

The El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate is also on Saturday but only worth 10-4-2-1 in Derby points. Choo Choo, also for Hollendorfer, is the 9-5 favorite with Paved for Mike McCarthy is 2-1.

On Sunday, (or late Saturday here) is the Hyacinth at Tokyo Racecourse. It has a 30-12-6-3 point designation. And on Monday is the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn. It is worth 10-4-2-1.

A handicapping lesson

Here’s a second contribution this week from Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). The thinking is by breaking down a race in detail you can learn to handicap like the pros.

His analysis is for the fifth race at Santa Anita.

“This is a $25,000 claimer coming down the hill at 6½ furlongs on the TURF, a unique layout which is closer to a European-like course than any other seen this country (with the exception of the raw simplistic layouts at Kentucky Downs). As I often write in both the WCHR and ECHR, in this sport, patience and INTENTIONS are always so important. With that in mind, the top selection is SOUTHERN FREEDOM (#2). Jacobson claimed him eight days ago, and now is back quickly, sending him down the hill with a plan in place, which is never a bad thing. Interestingly it’s his first try down the hill in 32 starts. The quick turnaround is a good sign as well, telling us he returned to his new barn in good order, ate up well, and likely hasn’t shown any signs of fatigue since that last start, thus David wheels him back quickly. Also note, he claimed him for himself, which he does about 75% of the time. What is interesting is that he moves up in class off the short claim, telling us he likes this one. For example, often times he’ll claim a horse for $25,000 and run for $12,500 the next outing, it’s just the way he does things, so this subtle placement is actually telling we believe. Looking for a hard-trying effort the final ⅛ fitting just fine class-wise. Interesting, but here’s similar new tactics with recent claim NEXT SPEAKER (#10) for Bob Hess, claiming him for $16,000 on Feb. 1, now moving to the turf and this downhill course, even removing the blinkers. Remember, the $25,000 level on the sod here is usually made up of regressing types, thus, we’ll take a seemingly cheaper runner who’s either sharp or trying something new, any day of the week over the dropper who’s plummeting down the class ladder. Interesting pair, both at prices.

“Win Contenders (order of preference): 2-10-4

“X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 5

“Positive Notes:

“4 Unusual Meeting - Prat ONLY rides live horses for Baltas, we’ll include in the mix.

“Negative Notes:

“5 Bourque - Simply needs a weaker circuit, just very little to offer outside of the ⅝ turf sprints at Del Mar.

“TOP PICK: SOUTHERN FREEDOM (#2 12-1 Roman)

“SECOND CHOICE: NEXT SPEAKER (#10 20-1 Maragh)

The West Coast Handicapping Report can be found at https://www.westcoasthorseracing.com It has been endorsed by leading trainers, handicappers and industry sources.

Santa Anita review

Dabster rallied late to win the $58,000 feature by 1 ¾ lengths over a mile. Sent off as the favorite, he chased down Air Vice Marshall for his second win at this distance. He has three wins lifetime in five starts.

“He wants to go two turns,” trainer Bob Baffert told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “He’s never been a real eager horse in the morning, but in the afternoon, he lays it down. He’ll go further, he was really running there at the end.”

Dabster paid $4.40, $2.80 and $2.10. The veteran campaigner Donworth was third.

Santa Anita preview

It’s not as good as last Saturday’s stakes-o-rama but it’s real good betting day with 10 races starting with an early post of noon. There are four turf races including the feature, the Grade 2 $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes for fillies and mares over a mile.

Madame Stripes is the 3-1 favorite for Neil Drysdale. She has run this distance seven times with two wins and three seconds. She is also seven of eight in the money on the Santa Anita turf. Kent Desormeaux has the ride. Insta Erma and Madame Dancealot are both 7-2 running for Richard Baltas.

It will be the seventh race at about 3:10 p.m.

The day has 97 runners with two also eligibles. Here are the field sizes, in order: 11, 10, 6, 8, 11, 9, 9, 12, 9, 12 (2 also eligibles). Obviously with those numbers the turf rail is set at zero.

Santa Anita will also have racing on Presidents Day.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

FIRST RACE: No. 10 Gringo Star (8-1)

Tried this sophomore gelding on the stretch out last time and we're willing to try one more time as he shortens back up in distance. He squandered a good trip going long in his most recent but the Eric Kruljac trainee had a terrible trip one back (at this distance) and might be more effective as a sprinter.

Friday Result: Mr. Twinery was a non-threatening fourth in the 5th race.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Chris Wade’s L.A. play of the day

SIXTH RACE: No. 8 Kue Tip (10-1)

He is the price play of the night for me at 10-1 odds in the sixth. Kue Tip is a trouble-prone runner, but the sophomore gelding is from the up-and-coming shedrow of trainer Jose Hernandez Jr., who has won at a 27% clip this season. Kue Tip has earned competitive figures with everything factored in (track variant) for connections that do well with entrants dropping in class (38%). He also finished well for fifth versus the top three finishers in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby 28 nights ago after a tough getaway. With a clean start and the drop in class tonight, this well-bred gelding could be first to the wire at a nice price.

(Note: Don’t worry, Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)
