Tayshaun Prince reportedly heading to Grizzlies in Rudy Gay trade

Forward Tayshaun Prince, who has played his entire 11-year career with the Detroit Pistons, is headed to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team trade that will send forward Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors and point guard Jose Calderon to the Pistons, according to multiple reports citing unnamed sources.

The reports appear to be accurate since all the players whose teams had games tonight were listed as inactive. The three-team deal includes swingman Austin Daye going from Detroit to Memphis, forward Ed Davis going from Toronto to Memphis and center Hamed Haddadi going from Memphis to Toronto.

Prince, who played at Compton Dominguez High and won an NBA title with the Pistons in 2004, seems to be a good fit for the Grizzlies, who have plenty of scorers and have now successfully dumped Gay’s $37-million contract over the next two seasons for Prince’s more reasonable $15 million. Calderon, who is under contract for $10.5 million this season, will be a free agent this summer.

Although never a star, the 6-foot-9 Prince was a pivotal piece in Detroit’s championship run with his solid defense and ability to fit with players like Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace, who needed to be focal points on offense.

In Memphis, where Gay was the team’s leading scorer at 17.2 points a game, Prince will play alongside 7-foot center Marc Gasol and 6-9 power forward Zach Randolph to form one of the biggest front lines in the NBA. Prince is averaging 11.7 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Calderon, who is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 assists, was clearly not happy after hearing rumors about the deal.

“It’s been my home for eight years,” Calderon said before Toronto’s game in Atlanta on Wednesday night. “I’ve done everything possible for this team. It’s tough. The fans have been with me since Day 1. It’s tough.”
