Return of Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick is near
Second baseman Howie Kendrick, sidelined since Aug. 6 because of a left knee sprain, took another significant step toward a return Friday, running the bases at about 90% before the Angels’ game against the Texas Rangers.
“I’m still not ready to go yet, but I’m close,” said Kendrick, who was batting .301 with 11 home runs and 47 runs batted in when he went on the disabled list. “It’s a progression. I’m going to do this for a couple more days and see where we are.”
With the Angels far out of playoff contention, would it be easy for Kendrick, who was nearly dealt to the Dodgers before the July 31 trade deadline and is expected be dangled as a trade chip to acquire a pitcher this winter, to just shut himself down for the rest of the season?
“I’m not that type of player — I want to play,” Kendrick said. “I like winning. We’ve been playing good baseball, but at the same time, I want to get back out there and play. I don’t want to go into the off-season injured.”
