Former Penn State president Graham Spanier charged in Sandusky case
Former Penn State president Graham Spanier was charged Thursday with perjury, obstruction, endangering the welfare of children and conspiracy for his handling of the Jerry Sandusky molesatation allegations.
Prosecutors also added counts against former Athletic Director Tim Curley and former Vice President Gary Schultz, who are already charged with perjury and failure to report child abuse.
“This is about three powerful and influential men, three men who used their positions at Penn State to cover up and conceal the activities” of Sandusky, said Pennsylvania Atty. Gen. Linda Kelly in announcing the charges.
Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator at Penn State, was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years. He is serving a 30- to 60-year sentence at a maximum security prison.
Prosecutors claimed that Spanier, Curley and Schultz knew of allegations that Sandusky had showered with boys in 1998 and 2001 and were involved in a cover-up.
All three men have maintained their innocence.
“They essentially turned a blind eye to the serial predatory acts committed by Jerry Sandusky,” said Kelly.
