Mike Trout, Hank Conger star in Angels’ loss

PEORIA, Ariz. — Mike Trout singled in his first spring at-bat and Hank Conger drove in five runs on Monday, but the Angels gave up seven runs in the final three innings of a 9-8 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

Trout singled, walked and scored two runs in his three plate appearances. Center fielder Peter Bourjos walked twice, scored twice and singled; he has reached base in every plate appearance this spring.

Conger, the projected backup catcher behind Chris Iannetta, hit a three-run home run in the first inning, doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the fifth. He did not bat again, although the chance of a cycle would have been remote for a catcher who has one triple in 224 major league at-bats.

Angels starter Garrett Richards gave up one run in two innings. Chad Cordero, the former closer for the Montreal Expos and Washington Nationals, gave up one run in one inning. Cordero is trying to return to the major leagues for the first time since 2010.

The Angels dropped to 0-4 this spring, blowing a five-run lead in the process. However, none of the pitchers who gave up that lead over the final three innings -- Matt Oye, Mark Sappington and 2012 top draft pick R.J. Alvarez -- are in contention to make the major league team.
