Watch Robin Ventura bury home plate in sand during epic tirade

Robin Ventura doesn’t seem to be a fan of baseball’s new home plate rule.

The Chicago White Sox manager doesn’t appear to be too crazy about home plate itself either.

At least he didn’t during an epic tirade Wednesday night -- during which he kicked sand over the plate no fewer than nine times during two separate trips -- that resulted in his ejection from his team’s 7-1 loss to the Giants in San Francisco.

The Sox appeared to preserve a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning when catcher Tyler Flowers tagged Giants baserunner Gregor Blanco well before home plate. But after a replay review Blanco was called safe because Flowers’ foot was determined to be in the basepath.

Ventura wasn’t happy in the least. He screamed at the umpires, stormed over and kicked dirt over the plate once, almost left but then turned and took three more swipes before deciding that was sufficient.

But not for long. the former Dodgers player berated the umpires some more before returning to the plate once again and covering it with dirt with five very deliberate kicks.

Of course, none of it did any good, as the Giants went on to score six more runs in the inning and ended up winning, 7-1.

“If you look at the spirit of the rule of what they are trying to do and what it’s actually doing it’s a joke,” Ventura said of rule 7.13, which states catchers can’t block the plate until possessing the ball. “They don’t take into consideration that the guy was out by a longshot.”
