USC got a jump on its 2015 signing class, adding kicker Matt Boermeester to its roster.

Boermeester, who played last season at Saddleback College, was awarded a scholarship on Tuesday and will have three seasons of eligibility, Coach Steve Sarkisian said after Tuesday night’s practice.

Senior Andre Heidari is the returning kicker but Boermeester has been getting opportunities to push him.

“Competition has been preached on this field for a long, long time,” Sarkisian said. “It’s been preached at every position.”

Boermeester, son of former UCLA kicker Peter Boermeester, made 11 of 13 field-goal attempts last season at Saddleback.

A USC spokesman said Boermeester was offered a scholarship under an NCAA exception that allows a non-recruited student-athlete to receive aid the day after practice starts. The scholarship counts against the 2015 signing class.

Under NCAA rules an athlete is not recruited unless he has been provided an official visit, had an arranged in-person off-campus encounter with a staff member or athletics representative or was issued a national letter of intent.

Sarkisian said Boormeester attended a camp during the summer.
