1985-86 CHORALE PROGRAMS ARE ANNOUNCED

The Orange County Pacific Chorale and the Master Chorale of Orange County have announced their programs for the 1985-86 season.

The 110-voice Orange County Pacific Chorale, conducted by John Alexander, will open its 18th season on Oct. 25 and 26 with a performance of Mozart’s “Mass in C Minor,” K. 427, and choruses from Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus,” Weber’s “Die Freishuetz” and Wagner’s “Tannhaueser” and “Lohengrin.” The chorale will be accompanied by the Pacific Symphony, conducted by Keith Clark. KFAC-FM radio announcer Carl Prinzi will introduce the operatic selections.

On Dec. 13 and 14, the chorale will offer a Christmas concert that includes Francis Poulenc’s “Quatre Motets Pour le Temps de Noel” and traditional carols. Organist Loreen Clousing and a small instrumental ensemble will provide accompaniment.

Scheduled for March 7 and 8 are Zoltan Kodaly’s “Te Deum of Buda Castle” and Liszt’s “Missa Solemnis,” with the Pacific Symphony directed by Clark. The Pacific Singers, a smaller group composed of 16 to 18 chorale members, also will present Gyorgy Ligeti’s “Lux Aeterna.”

On May 16 and 17, the chorale will conclude its season with performances of North and South American music at Chapman College.

All but the last Friday concert will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 600 St. Andrews Road in Newport Beach, and all Saturday concerts will be held at Santa Ana High School, 520 W. Walnut St. Programs begin at 8:30 p.m. For further information, call (714) 542-1790.

The 110-voice Master Chorale of Orange County, led by Maurice Allard, will open its 30th season on Sept. 29 with a program featuring all-Viennese music. The chorale will present Mozart’s “Coronation” Mass, K. 317, with soloists tenor Jonathan Mack, soprano Allison England and contralto Alice Baker, and excerpts from Lehar’s “The Merry Widow” and Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.” The program also will include popular Viennese waltzes.

On Oct. 18, the chorale and Peter Schickele as “P. D. Q. Bach” will present a comic parody of works by J.S. Bach. According to Allard, this will be the first Orange County presentation of Schickele’s work.

The chorale’s Christmas programs on Dec. 7 and 8 will include two contemporary “Glorias,” one by Francis Poulenc, the other by English composer John Rutter, 39. Additionally, the chorale will perform popular seasonal music. This concert will be at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, East 11th Street and Prospect Avenue in Santa Ana.

The Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah” will be presented in the Master Chorale’s third annual sing-along performance Dec. 22 at South Coast Community Church, Irvine.

Spring concerts will include Verdi’s “Requiem” on March 2, and on April 20 at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, the chorale will re-create a baroque Lutheran church service, which will incorporate Bach’s Cantata No. 4, “Christ Lag in Todes Banden.”

The chorale’s season will conclude on June 7 and 8 with concerts of pop selections at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa.
