The Women’s Tennis Assn. has paid a $15,000 penalty to the promoter of the Sunkist WTA tournament in Amelia Island, Fla., as a result of the WTA’s inability to fulfill its player commitments there.
Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert Lloyd, two of the top players in the world, didn’t play in the tournament. Other highly regarded players also dropped out.
