San Diego College Baseball : USIU Sweep Is Led by Botte’s Bat

Chris Botte had a home run, triple and double and drove in the winning runs in each game to lead United States International University to a sweep of Massachusetts Saturday at USIU.

The Gulls (17-18-1) won the first game, 12-7, and the second, 9-6. In the opener, Botte hit a two-run double in a seven-run seventh inning as USIU overcame a 5-4 Massachusetts lead. In the second game, Botte’s two-run triple highlighted a six-run USIU third.

Noel Bishop picked up a complete-game victory in the opener, and Sean Rydell started and went five innings to get the victory in the second game.

Jay Zerner supplied most of Massachusetts’ offense with three home runs, two in the first game.

In other games:

San Diego State 2, Western Oregon State 0--Mike Erb pitched a complete-game two-hitter and struck out eight to lead the Aztecs (16-12-1) at Smith Field. SDSU scored its runs in the first inning with the help of two consecutive balks by starter and loser Rod Gjesdal.

UC San Diego 4-9, Occidental 3-0--Gary Fessia knocked in the winning run in the first game and hit a three-run home run in the second to help the Tritons (16-9) sweep a doubleheader at UCSD. Fessia singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to give UCSD the victory in the opener. In the second game, Derek Alkonis hit a grand slam and Fessia hit a three-run homer to help the Tritons take an 8-0 lead in the first.
