Jeanne Jones and Infinidad to Try Again

Share

Two horses with disappointing finishes in Breeders’ Cup races two weeks ago will return to Hollywood Park this weekend to make amends.

Jeanne Jones, beaten by a longshot in the final strides of the Juvenile Fillies race, heads a field of seven in today’s $500,000 Starlet Stakes. Infinidad, heavily favored but a fourth-place finisher in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff race, heads Sunday’s $200,000 Matriarch Stakes.

Jeanne Jones, a loser by a nose to Epitome, a 30-1 longshot, after losing a shoe during the race, will be joined by two other Breeders’ Cup starters. Also in the race will be Pearlie Gold and Lost Kitty, both of whom finished well off the pace. Jeanne Jones will again have Bill Shoemaker aboard for the one-mile Grade I test for 2-year-old fillies. Joe’s Tammie, a four-time winner, will make her West Coast debut today.

Sunday, Infinidad heads a field that also includes Carotene, winner of last month’s $400,000 Yellow Ribbon Stakes.

Santella Mac, ridden by Aaron Gryder, was outrun early but picked up the pace in the upper stretch to win the $44,000 feature race on the turf by 3 1/2 lengths Friday.

Sperry, with Patrick Valenzuela up, finished second, 1 lengths in front of Rufjan, ridden by Frank Olivares.

Santella Mac ran the mile in 1:34 4/5 and paid $4.80 to win.
