Californians Greg Foster, Janet Evans and Karch Kiraly were among the 10 finalists named for the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award. The Amateur Athletic Union, which released the names Monday, has annually recognized the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States since 1930 with the award.
The 1987 AAU Sullivan Award finalists include: Jim Abbott, Ann Arbor, Mich., baseball; Kelcie Banks, Houston, boxing; Janet Evans, Placentia, swimming; Greg Foster, Chino Hills, track and field; Scott Johnson, Lincoln, Neb., gymnastics; Karch Kiraly, San Diego, volleyball; David Robinson, Woodbridge, Va., basketball; Tracie Ruiz-Conforto, Redmond, Wash., synchronized swimming; Mark Schultz, Villanova, Pa., wrestling; John Smith, Stillwater, Okla., wrestling.
All 10 finalists will be invited to Indianapolis for presentation ceremonies at the AAU Sullivan Award dinner, March 7, 1988.
