Prep Soccer Roundup : Woodruff Helps Newport Harbor Win Twice, Stay Undefeated

David Woodruff scored three goals for Newport Harbor High School, as the Sailors (6-0-1) won two games on the opening day of the Marina-Fountain Valley boys’ soccer tournament at Marina High School.

In their opening game, the Sailors defeated Thousand Oaks, 2-1. In that match Woodruff scored one goal, teammate Jason Henninger scored another and Sailor goal keeper Ken Wilcut had four saves. Mark Allen scored Thousand Oaks’ only goal.

In the second-round game, Woodruff scored two goals as Newport Harbor shut out San Clemente, 3-0. Garth Tamblyn added the team’s other goal and Wilcut had five saves. The Sailors will face host Marina today in a quarterfinal match at 10:30 a.m.

In other Marina tournament championship round games:

Marina 3, Gahr 0--Mike Lapper, Darrin Fishman and Kevin Martin each scored one goal for the tournament hosts, and the Vikings (4-6-1) advanced to the quarterfinal round against Newport Harbor. In the opening round, Marina and Katella finished in a scoreless tie, but the Vikings advanced on corner kicks.

In the consolation round:

Katella 2, North Torrance 1--Senior Rich Henry and freshman Armando Orizaba each scored a goal in the second round match. Katella (5-0-2) will play Bullard High School of Fresno at 10:30 a.m. today.

In the Damien tournament:

Mater Dei 3, Santa Barbara 1--Paul Oldham, Doug West and John Coggins each scored one goal in a second-round victory over Santa Barbara. Finbar O’Donaghue scored Santa Barbara’s only goal.

The three Monarch players each had scored earlier in the day in Mater Dei’s first-round game, a 4-1 victory over Muir of Pasadena. Oldham scored two goals in the early game, bringing his season total to 19. Mater Dei (10-1) plays Riverside Poly in a quarterfinal match at 10:30 a.m. today.

In the girls’ Ocean View tournament:

Corona del Mar 1, Esperanza 0--Julie Smith scored a second-half goal as Corona del Mar advanced to the quarterfinal round. Corona del Mar tied Mira Costa, 0-0, but advanced on penalty kicks, 5-3, in the first round.

Goalie Kim Kostad had 13 saves for Corona del Mar (6-2-1) which plays Capistrano Valley today in a quarterfinal match at 11 a.m.
