Estancia Tournament : Corona del Mar Rallies to Beat Jordan, 60-55

Corona del Mar High School advanced to the championship of the Coast Christmas basketball tournament with a come-from-behind 60-55 victory over Long Beach Jordan Tuesday at Estancia High School.

The Sea Kings trailed through the first 3 1/2 quarters but stayed close and finally tied Jordan at 53-53 with 4:20 to play. With 2:40 remaining, Corona del Mar took the lead when Panther guard Fred Wilson first fouled Sea King forward Matt Cwiertnia, then received a technical for complaining about the call. Cwiertnia made three of his four free throws to give Corona del Mar (8-3) a 58-55 lead.

The Sea Kings will face Edison in the championship game at 8 tonight.

Junior center Brian Spratt scored 16 points to lead the Sea Kings, who start four juniors. Cwiertnia added 15 points. Matt Herrington scored 12 points and led all players with 12 rebounds.

Tyrone Julks scored 14 points to lead Jordan (6-5).

Edison 72, Mission Viejo 49--The Chargers broke open the game midway through the second quarter when Alvin Loftis scored four free throws, including two on a technical foul, and teammate Mike Foster followed with a quick basket to give Edison (9-4) a 26-17 lead. Loftis led Edison with 24 points and Chip Hanlon added 16 points.

Mission Viejo (5-6) was plagued by poor shooting from the line in the first half, connecting on 8 of 19 free throws in the first two quarters. Sophomore Eric Cramer led the Diablos with 11 points.

In other Coast Christmas tournament games:

Los Alamitos 73, Edgewood 64--Brett Pagett scored 27 points, 18 on three-point field goals, to lead the Griffins (8-5), who play Irvine in the fifth-place game at 4:20 today.

Irvine 55, Cypress 31-- Raphael Molle scored 17 points to lead Irvine (6-6). Greg Bedford had 13 points for Cypress, which plays Edgewood in the seventh-place game at 2:40 today.

Huntington Beach 94, Costa Mesa 74--The Oilers were led by Rich Hughes with 30 points. Andy Thompson added 17. Costa Mesa was led by Paul Kos, with 26 points. Huntington Beach will play Estancia for the consolation championship at 1 today.

Estancia 59, Laguna Hills 51--Mike Curtis had 19 points and Chris Rupsa 16 for Estancia. Laguna Hills was led by Trent DeVreugd, who scored 18 points.

Dana Hills 58, Sonora 50--Tyrone Meixsell and John Lloyd each scored 16 points to lead the Dolphins. Scott St. Clair scored 16 for the Raiders. Dana Hills will play Hoover at 9:40 a.m. today in the ninth-place game.
