Aztecs to Play 7 Tournament Teams, USD

Seven NCAA tournament teams highlight the 1989-90 San Diego State basketball schedule released Wednesday. The seven are Louisville, North Carolina, Missouri, Evansville, Clemson and Western Athletic Conference rivals Texas El Paso and Colorado State.

SDSU also will renew its rivalry with the University of San Diego after a year off and play U.S. International. USC, Texas Tech, UC Riverside and Central Connecticut State are included on the non-conference schedule.

SDSU will play 16 of its 17 home games at the San Diego Sports Arena. The only exception is a season-opening exhibition against the Townsville Suns, an Australian club team, at Peterson Gym Nov. 16.

GOLF

Phil Mickelson, a two-time San Diego Section golfer of the year for University of San Diego High School, was selected to the NCAA All-American college golf team. As a freshman at Arizona State, Mickelson became the youngest player to win the NCAA individual title. He is also the first left-handed golfer in the 25-year history of the All-American program.

BASEBALL

John Harmon, a long-time baseball coach in the San Diego area, has been selected as new head coach at San Diego City College. Harmon, a former player at City College, spent 17 years at Poway High School teaching and coaching.

SAILING

Eleven double-handed boats will set sail from Shelter Island Saturday to compete in the “Race for Life.” The race begins at 1 p.m. and will send competitors on a 2,300-mile sailing adventure to Honolulu. It features monohulled yachts with two crew members each.
