Woodland Hills Beats CSLA in Musial Finale

Chae-Ho Chong hit a two-run home run and Jeff Beck and Jeff Bodeau combined to throw a four-hitter to lead the Woodland Hills Astros to a 5-1 victory Wednesday over host Cal State Los Angeles in the championship game of the Stan Musial tournament.

The victory qualified the Astros (26-8) for the Stan Musial regional tournament Aug. 10-13 in Sacramento.

Cal State L. A. took a 1-0 lead before Chong, of Cal State Northridge, homered to right-center field in the second inning. Chong’s homer scored Dave Tokheim, an outfielder from UCLA, who had doubled to right.

Tokheim and Billy Morris, of Pierce College, each had two hits and Mike Lieberthal added a doubled for the Astros, who compiled a 4-1 record to win the six-team tournament.

Beck (5-0), a right-hander, struck out seven and allowed four hits and one unearned run in eight innings.

Paul Stankowski of Oxnard shot a six-over-par 77 Wednesday to fall seven strokes off the pace after 36 holes in the 23rd Pacific Coast Golf Assn. Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Stankowski, who opened the tournament with a 70 Tuesday on the par-71, 6,808-yard Lake Course, is alone in sixth place. John Abendroth of Burlingame, Calif., leads by one stroke after posting rounds of 71-68--139.

Tony Chieffo of Granada Hills and Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys were the only other Valley-area entries to make the cut. Chieffo shot 77, Steinberg carded 75, and their 36-hole totals of 152 beat the cut by two strokes.

Buz Greene of Thousand Oaks shot 85 for a two-day total of 165. Dave Fernandes of Woodland Hills shot 87 and his total of 169 placed him last in the field after 36 holes.

John Tomac of Chatsworth, the reigning world mountain bike champion, heads the U. S. men’s team that will compete in the World Cycling Championships in Lyon and Chambery, France, Aug. 14-26.

Maureen Manley of Thousand Oaks was named to the women’s team and will compete in the team time trial.

The U. S. Cycling Federation released its complete roster for the world championships Wednesday. Track events will run Aug. 14-20 in Lyon, with the road events being conducted held in Chambery, Aug. 23-26.

Michelle Palmisano scored a game-high 29 points to lead Thousand Oaks High to a 50-20 victory over Burroughs in the consolation championship of the Bell-Jeff girls’ basketball tournament Wednesday.

Anjanette Dionne scored a game-high 14 points for Hart, but the Indians lost to Channel Islands, 39-35, to place eighth in the 24-team tournament.

Lisa Leslie scored 30 points to lead Morningside to a 46-40 victory over Washington for the tournament championship.

In other games, Muir defeated Pasadena, 42-33, for third place and Redlands defeated Palos Verdes, 50-38, for fifth place.

Steve deLaveaga, the career scoring leader at Cal Lutheran, scored seven points for the Lakers in their 115-112 victory Wednesday over the New York Knicks in the Southern California Summer Professional Basketball League at Loyola Marymount.

DeLaveaga hit three field goals and one free throw.
