In other Above The Rim games:

Torrey Pines 98, Menlo 39--Host Torrey Pines (6-2) had the most one-sided game of the tournament’s opening day. The Falcons led at each quarter, 26-4, 52-11 and 73-28 against Division V Menlo (6-8).

Scot Pollard scored 21 and Steve Lemery 20 for Torrey Pines, which also got 15 from Peter Bates, and 14 apiece from Craig Brown and John Allred.

Menlo Coach Jamie Kling was gracious in defeat and said the loss wouldn’t prevent his team from returning if they were asked.

“We would just as soon play their best,”he said. “We come to these to play these guys. It would have been nice for (Falcon Coach John Farrell) to let up a little at the end.”

Farrell used nine players in the first half and had most of his reserves on the floor with 4:48 left.

Santa Ana Mater Dei 76, Carlsbad 53--Reggie Geary, who is going to Arizona next season, scored 21 points to lead Mater Dei (11-1). Kewan Shariff scored 18 for Carlsbad (5-4).

Valhalla 69, Red Bluff 63--Beau Sager scored a game-high 21 points for the Norsemen, who outscored Red Bluff, 24-15, in the final quarter. Teammate Darrick Freeman added 15 points and David Wiley grabbed 11 rebounds.

Spartan Classic

Chula Vista 84, San Dieguito 69--Jerome Green’s 26 points lifted the Spartans (6-4) in the opening game of their own tournament. Alberto Marzan added 14 points and nine rebounds to a winning effort. David Demian led San Dieguito (0-5) with 22 points.

Grossmont 67, Oceanside 65 (OT)--Grossmont took a 37-31 halftime lead but was held to eight third-quarter points. The Foothillers regrouped in the fourth quarter and forced overtime, where they outlasted Oceanside (1-6). Mike Kingsley’s 26 points and five assists paced Grossmont (5-1).

Helix 61, Crawford 47--Lloyd Lake helped Helix (5-0) with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Rahmon Anderson led Crawford (0-6) with 13 points.

Fallbrook 76, Hilltop 40--Three of Fallbrook’s seven scorers were in double figures against Hilltop (0-8). Steve Pack’s 28 points and five assists led Fallbrook (7-2).

Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic

Poway 56, (LA) Fairfax 55--Fairfax appeared to tie the game on a long shot with time running out, but officials ruled it was a two-pointer after the buzzer. Todd Fortney (14 points) and Kyle Milling (10 points, 10 rebounds) led Poway (8-2).

Pepsi-SUHI Tournament

Kearny 98, Mission (Canada) 28--All 10 players scored, including five in double figures, in one of four first-round games at Sweetwater.
