Lopez Defeats Gamache, Takes WBA Title
Tony (the Tiger) Lopez stopped undefeated Joey Gamache 40 seconds into the 11th round Saturday at Portland, Me., to win the World Boxing Assn. lightweight title that Gamache held only four months.
Lopez, trailing on points, slowed Gamache, 26, in the 10th round before unleashing a series of overhand combinations that sent Gamache onto the ropes and down for the first time in his career.
Gamache, 29-1 with 18 knockouts, staggered to his feet at the count of eight, but referee James Santa halted the fight.
Two judges had Gamache ahead, and the fighters were even on a third judge’s card.
Lopez, 30, has a record of 41-3-1 with 28 knockouts.
It was the 10th title fight for Lopez, who is 7-2-1 in those bouts.
It was Gamache’s first defense of the title he won in the same arena four months ago when Chil Sung Chun of South Korea was unable to answer the bell for the ninth round.
