Long Beach State announced the hiring of assistant coaches in three sports. Matt Hart, a former 49er assistant, returns to the men’s basketball team after spending the 1993-94 season as an assistant at USC. Gwendolyn Loud will coach the men’s and women’s sprinters and jumpers for the 49ers’ track and field program. Sharon Turner joins the women’s basketball staff. . . . Joey Hawkins of Huntington Beach advanced to the first round of the main event in the Oxbow World Longboard Championships at Surfrider Beach in Malibu. Hawkins, who was 1992 World Champion, had the third highest score of the day in one of his heats with 26.30 points. Colin McPhillips of Capistrano Beach, who was the 1994 U.S. Open Longboarding Champion, is also scheduled to compete today the main event beginning at 8 a.m. today.
