FAIRPLEX : Tight Turns Are Not a Problem
Jockey Paul Toscano, handling Discard The Five beautifully around the tight Fairplex Park turns, guided the small colt to a gate-to-wire victory in the $100,000 Barretts Juvenile on Wednesday at Pomona.
Discard The Five took control around the final turn and beat the favorite, Nightcapper, by two lengths in the 6 1/2-furlong race for 2-year-old colts and geldings.
Grant Hofmans, son of and assistant to trainer David Hofmans, said the colt’s size helped on the five-eighths-mile Fairplex oval.
“We figured he was about the only speed in the race, and, as little as he is, we hoped he would take the turns better, and he did,” Hofmans said.
It was Toscano’s second stakes victory of the eight-day-old meet.
