Saying the film industry is hiding behind a “cloak of creativity” to deny access to ethnic actors and crew members, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Friday in Encino that he will picket KABC Channel 7 on Monday night when the station airs the Academy Awards ceremony.

Jackson made the statement after a meeting with representatives from Walt Disney Co., Sony Inc. and Universal Studios, as well as executives of the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, to discuss his campaign to end what he called racism in the movie industry.

Oscar protest--The Rev. Jesse Jackson plans to picket television station KABC Channel 7 during Monday night’s Academy Awards broadcast. A headline in Saturday’s edition’s incorrectly identified the station’s affiliation.

Jackson said that although the meeting was informative, the industry still does not have goals for increasing diversity. “The bottom line is there is no policy of inclusion, no target date or timetable,” Jackson said.

The civil rights leader plans to hold a community meeting today at Holman United Methodist Church to discuss the issue.

J. Nicholas Counter, president of the alliance of producers, disputed Jackson’s charges, saying there are many minority success stories in Hollywood.
