San Jose Wins Shootout, Awaits Galaxy

The San Jose Clash defeated the Kansas City Wiz, 2-1 in a shootout, after a 0-0 tie in regulation Saturday in front of a Major League Soccer crowd of 18,594 at Arrowhead Stadium.

Despite winning, the Clash (15-17) finished the regular season in fourth place in the Western Conference and will play host to the Los Angeles Galaxy (18-13) in the first game of a best-of-three playoff series at San Jose on Thursday night at 7:30.

Paul Bravo scored in the fifth round of a shootout Saturday night to give the Clash the victory.

Eric Wynalda also scored for San Jose in the shootout and Preki countered for Kansas City. Clash goalkeeper Dave Salzwedel made five saves in regulation play and Wiz goalie Garth Lagerwy stopped six shots.

Columbus 1, New England 0--Brian McBride scored in the 37th minute as the Crew (15-17) beat the Revolution (15-17) in front of 38,633 at Foxboro Stadium to gain the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.

Tampa Bay 4, New York/New Jersey 1--MLS scoring leader Roy Lassiter netted his 26th and 27th goals as the Mutiny (20-12) routed the MetroStars (15-17) in front of 11,145 at Tampa Stadium to finish with a league-best 20 victories.

Lassiter’s first goal, in the 11th minute, came off an assist by Carlos Valderrama. Lassiter scored again in the 30th minute, taking advantage of a misplayed back header by MetroStars defender Chris da Silva.

Washington 3, Colorado 0--El Salvador striker Raul Diaz Arce scored his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season as D.C. United (16-16) completed its regular season with a victory over the Rapids (11-21) in front of 20,573 at RFK Stadium.

Shawn Medved also scored for United. Colorado’s Chris Henderson completed the scoring in the final minute.
