New Guys Help Out Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins spent a day dealing and winning. Coach Eddie Johnston said there was a correlation between the two.

Petr Nedved scored twice in the first six minutes as the new-look Penguins ended St. Louis’ five-game winning streak by beating the Blues, 4-2, Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins have acquired six players in three trades in a 48-hour span. Two newcomers--former Islander defenseman Darius Kasparaitis and center Andres Johansson--contributed. Johansson assisted on Nedved’s first goal and Kasparaitis had an empty-net goal.

Defenseman Lyle Odelein’s first goal this season broke a third-period tie, giving New Jersey a 2-1 victory over Ottawa at Kanata, Canada. . . . Defenseman Mark Tinordi banged in a rebound with 39.6 seconds remaining in regulation and Jim Carey stopped a penalty shot as Washington salvaged a 2-2 tie with visiting Boston. . . . Veteran forwards Wendel Clark and Kirk Muller helped Toronto end a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over visiting Buffalo. Clark scored twice and Muller had two assists. . . . Corey Hirsch made 36 saves and added an assist as Vancouver beat visiting Dallas, 2-0. The shutout was Hirsch’s first of the season and second of his career. . . . Right wing Tony Amonte scored twice as visiting Chicago rallied for a 4-4 tie against Edmonton.
