Matador Women Lose Two at Start

Two of the top players on the Cal State Northridge women’s team are likely to miss the basketball season because of knee injuries.

Sherry Ramirez, a 6-foot-2 center, left Monday night’s 67-53 exhibition loss to the Amager Club of Denmark after injuring her right knee. She will be out at least three weeks. Results of tests on the knee are expected Friday.

Neda Milic, a 6-1 forward, will use her redshirt year, Abraham said.

Milic was going to try to play Monday, but collapsed during pregame warmups. Milic had surgery to repair a torn left anterior cruciate ligament in her native Serbia, but the procedure was unsuccessful.

On the sidelines: Kennedy High linebacker Byron Williams has been suspended from school for the second time this season and his status on the team for the playoffs is in peril, Coach Bob Francola said..

Williams and teammate Matt Garnas were suspended and missed the Golden Cougars’ victory over San Fernando last week. Garnas will be back for Friday’s playoff game against Palisades.

The 6-2 forward-center averaged 16.7 points and 10.8 rebounds last season.

Big Wave: Cedric Suitt, a 6-11 center from Mays High in Atlanta, has signed with Pepperdine.

He averaged 10 points and 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots last season.

Royal High begins defense of its Southern Section Division IV water polo championship against Arroyo Grande today at 3:15 p.m. at Rancho Simi Community Pool.

In other Division IV quarterfinals at 3:15 today, Buena plays Cabrillo at Cuesta College and Dos Pueblos plays at Agoura.
