Even without its No. 1 player, Kansas is the No. 1 team.

When Jacque Vaughn, the senior point guard and preseason All-American, does get back, the Jayhawks could hardly do much better. They took over the top spot in this week’s Associated Press poll, despite a sluggish 79-71 victory over San Diego on Sunday.

Kansas (5-0), which rolled past LSU, California and Virginia to win the Maui Classic last week, received 58 first-place votes and 1,759 points from the 71-member media panel.

It’s the fifth year in a row in which the Jayhawks have been ranked No. 1 at some point.

Stanford remained No. 1 in the Associated Press women’s poll. The Cardinal (6-0) received 39 of 41 first-place votes and got 1,023 points. . . . Forward Corey Louis, Florida State’s leading scorer and rebounder, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
