United, It Falls: San Jose Rallies in Second Half

Jeff Baicher scored two second-half goals and Dominic Kinnear and Lawrence Lozzano added shootout goals to give the San Jose Clash a 3-2 victory over DC United on Saturday at Washington before 24,775.

Jaime Moreno opened the scoring in the ninth minute and Diaz Arce gave United (4-1) a 2-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season in the 23rd minute. Baicher scored in the 67th and 76th minutes for the Clash (3-3).

New York-New Jersey 2, Columbus 1--A.J. Wood and Mike Sorber scored first-half goals and the MetroStars swarmed around goalkeeper Brad Friedel for much of the first 45 minutes in their victory before 18,107 at East Rutherford, N.J.

The teams played without several key offensive players, called up by their national teams for World Cup qualifiers.

Columbus (3-2) was without midfielder Doctor Khumalo of South Africa. The MetroStars (2-4) played without forwards Giovanni Savarese of Venezuela and Antony De Avila of Colombia.

New England 2, Colorado 1--Imad Baba and Alberto Naveda scored in a shootout to give the Revolution (3-2) a victory over the Rapids (2-5) before 12,219 at Foxboro, Mass.

Joe-Max Moore gave the Revolution (3-2) a 1-0 lead with a 14th-minute penalty kick, awarded after Colorado’s Marcelo Balboa tripped Ted Chronopoulos in the penalty area.

The Rapids (2-5) tied it with one second to play when Peter Vermes headed in Chris Henderson’s corner kick.
